Daughter of a Panther
My father, Veronza Bowers Jr., was a Black Panther. He was incarcerated when I was six years old and has been in prison for decades since. Before that, I went to school under an alias, watched police shootouts from too close, and lived with death threats against my family. Most people raised in that kind of fire spend their life trying to put it out. I learned to use it instead.
The discovery that started everything
I found out the white mother who raised me wasn't my biological mother. I tracked down and reunited with my Black biological mother. That single fact lit the question I've spent my career setting fire to in other people: what happens to a person's performance, their confidence, their ceiling, when the story they were told about who they are turns out to be incomplete?
Building my own identity, on purpose
I put myself through Berkeley while reconstructing my own sense of self from the ground up. That became the seed of everything I do now: identity isn't fixed. It's installed, consciously or not. I decided to learn how to install it on purpose. For myself first, then for everyone I've worked with since. I'm not the person who survives the fire. I'm the one who starts it in you on purpose, so something better can stand where the old identity used to be.
When the board froze, she got on a plane.
